The Gathering Place — Conceptual Vision
An illustrative exploration of culture, performance, gathering, and shared public life within the African Diaspora District framework.
Why the African Diaspora?
The African diaspora is one of humanity's great stories of resilience, creativity, and contribution. Across continents and generations, people of African descent have helped shape music, science, medicine, agriculture, literature, cuisine, entrepreneurship, athletics, and public life. These achievements have influenced societies around the world, yet they are often understood as separate stories rather than as part of a shared global narrative.
The African Diaspora District explores the possibility of bringing these stories together through culture, learning, hospitality, and shared experiences. It is intended to celebrate achievement, encourage dialogue, and create opportunities for people of every background to discover the richness and continuing evolution of the African diaspora.
Prince George's County offers a unique setting for imagining such a place because of its cultural vitality, history, and connections to communities across the African diaspora.
Great places are shaped by the values that guide them.
The African Diaspora District is guided by three enduring principles—Ubuntu, Gaia, and Ancestry. Together, they provide a framework for evaluating ideas, shaping partnerships, and ensuring that growth strengthens people, place, and future generations. These principles offer a practical lens for evaluating every opportunity, investment, and partnership within the African Diaspora District.
Ubuntu recognizes that thriving communities are built on belonging, shared responsibility, and mutual care. It asks how places can strengthen relationships, expand opportunity, and create environments where people of all ages and backgrounds feel welcomed, respected, and connected. In the African Diaspora District, hospitality, collaboration, and civic participation are not amenities—they are foundational values that shape how the district grows and serves future generations.
Does this strengthen community?
Does it create opportunities for people to contribute?
Will future generations inherit a stronger sense of belonging?
Gaia reminds us that every generation holds the natural environment in trust for those who follow. Development should respect ecological systems, celebrate the character of the landscape, and contribute to long-term environmental stewardship. The district seeks to demonstrate that economic vitality and environmental responsibility can reinforce one another rather than compete.
Does this respect the land and its natural systems?
Does it improve environmental resilience?
Will it leave the landscape healthier for future generations?
Ancestry recognizes that history, genealogy, scholarship, and cultural memory are powerful foundations for innovation and shared identity. The African Diaspora District seeks to preserve stories, celebrate achievement, and inspire discovery so that every generation can better understand its past while imagining new possibilities for the future.
Does this preserve and expand knowledge?
Does it honor the diversity of human experience?
Will future generations better understand their shared story?
Together, Ubuntu, Gaia, and Ancestry reflect a simple aspiration: to create a place where people flourish, the land is respected, and the stories of past and future generations remain connected. Guided by these principles, the African Diaspora District invites us to imagine how they might take shape through meaningful experiences, partnerships, and places.
What does it mean for a place to truly succeed?
Jobs, investment, and economic growth matter. So do safety, opportunity, belonging, strong institutions, a healthy environment, and pride in the place we share.
The African Diaspora District embraces a broader measure of success: community well-being. It asks not only whether a place generates economic value, but whether that value can endure—strengthening people, supporting resilient institutions, caring for the environment, and creating opportunities across generations.
In this framework, economic success and community well-being are not competing goals. Each can help sustain the other.

Imagine the Possibilities
The African Diaspora District is envisioned as a living destination where culture, learning, hospitality, innovation, and environmental stewardship come together. Rather than prescribing specific buildings or attractions, this framework invites exploration of the many experiences that could enrich the lives of residents and visitors alike. The experiences described below are illustrative rather than exhaustive, intended to inspire conversation about what could be created together.
Imagine vibrant public spaces where music, dance, theater, storytelling, and visual arts celebrate the extraordinary diversity of the African diaspora throughout the year.
Imagine a place where visitors can explore their family history, preserve personal stories, and connect with the journeys that have shaped communities across generations.
Imagine students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and lifelong learners gathering to exchange ideas, celebrate achievement, and inspire the next generation of leaders.
Imagine restaurants, markets, festivals, and gathering places that showcase the remarkable culinary traditions and hospitality found throughout the African diaspora.
Imagine walking trails, gardens, and outdoor spaces that celebrate the beauty of the surrounding landscape while encouraging environmental stewardship and connection to nature.
Imagine conferences, festivals, performances, athletic events, family reunions, and community celebrations bringing people together throughout every season of the year.
The possibilities are limited only by our collective imagination and our shared commitment to creating a place that serves generations to come.

The African Diaspora District is not intended to be a finished proposal.
It is an invitation to imagine what becomes possible when culture, stewardship, education, innovation, and community are considered together.
This vision will be strengthened by artists, educators, entrepreneurs, historians, environmental stewards, community organizations, public leaders, and residents who believe that great places are created through shared imagination and collective effort.
